The Paso Robles AVA is on California’s central coast. A warm and sunny area it is known for its full-bodied fruit forward varietal wine, Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. Tablas Creek Vineyard goes in another direction. They have realized that the climate has a lot in common with France’s Rhone Valley, a region known for structure and earthy flavors.

With their Paletin de Tablas red they have taken the idea of a Rhone influenced California wine to a very good place. It is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Canocie, a blend you might find in a Chateaunuef Du Pape. While a bit lighter than most Chatauenuef’s it has all complexity and depth of flavors you could ask for with some dark plum flavors balanced with spicy notes and earthiness, good tannins and acidity.

It is great with hearty winter stews, strong cheeses and winter vegetable dishes.
